The Riegel needle offers excellent straight-line stability. Its blade is shaped specifically for straight strokes, so once you get a feel for the blade and the technique, you can scribe clean, straight lines even freehand. It's also durable, so you can use it to carve by scraping, and it works well as an aggressive cutting tool for scribing panel lines.

The Curve needle moves easily in any direction, making it ideal for curves and circular work. Its tip has no set orientation, so you can draw in any direction and even change course mid-stroke. Because of this, it's generally best to use guide tape or a similar aid when scribing lines. It's a forgiving needle that's relatively easy to handle, even for beginners.
